Area History

Any visitor to the Mining Camp Restaurant quickly learns about the long and colorful history of the area, as newspaper and magazine clippings adorn the walls and provide a historic glimpse into the legend and lore of this area. These articles include rare tellings of the stories of treasure hunters, spanish gold, murder, mystery and intrigue.

Many requests have been made over the years to make this treasure trove of information available to the public. We are beginning the process of adding many of these clippings on the wall to our online historic archive section of this web site. This will be long and tedious process to convert many of these old clippings in an electronic format. If you would like to be kept informed when this archive is updated, please send your request to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

We are long standing member of the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce, there you will be able to find lots of information on the Superstition Mountain area. Our neighbour to the north of us is the Lost Dutchman State Park. You will find both their links below.

Our History

The world famous Mining Camp Restaurant opened its doors to the public in 1961. The restaurant is located at the base of the beautiful Superstition Mountains in Apache Junction, Arizona. The restaurant's unique exterior is made up of roughly sawn ponderosa pine hauled from Payson, Arizona. Today, the restaurant still follows the theme of the early mining camp cook shanty.

Cook shanties and good food are synonymous, as any old-time miner can tell you. A replica of the old mining camp cook shanty sits today at the base of the mysterious Superstition Mountains, and along the romantic Apache Trail. The Mining Camp Restaurant has an interior that copies that of the old shanty with amazing authenticity and the good food is there too, in plentiful quantities.
